As October rolls around and the Southern Hemisphere begins to warm up, adapting to the seasonal rhythm of spring here in Australia brings a refreshing change. Coming from a Northern background where October signifies autumn, experiencing spring blooming in October feels wonderfully unique. Eager to chase the sunshine and the vibrant colours of the season, we headed out on a bright, clear day to Banksia Park, one of Melbourne’s premier cherry blossom viewing spots located in Heidelberg, near Doncaster.

A Touch of Japan in Melbourne

Cherry blossom trees in Banksia Park are maintained by the "Cherry Friends" volunteer group.

Stepping into the park, we were instantly greeted by breathtaking views of delicate pink blossoms. The park is home to around 100 cherry blossom trees—specifically Japanese Flowering Cherry (Prunus serrulata) and Higan Cherry (Prunus subhirtella) varieties. Interestingly, these trees hold a special history: they were originally a gift from the Japanese government in February 1980, later transplanted from the Dandenong Valley Parklands to Banksia Park in 1988. Today, they are lovingly maintained by the "Cherry Friends" volunteer group.

Walking through the park under a canopy of blossoms, surrounded by families taking photos and enjoying picnics, we even bumped into several Japanese families, making us feel as though we had momentarily stepped straight into Japan.

Cherry trees are relatively low, making it much easier to snap close-up photos and portraits.

Unlike the towering cherry trees found in some parts of the world, the trees here are relatively low, making it much easier to snap close-up photos and portraits with the blossoms. Underneath the brilliant blue skies, the blossoms looked exceptionally radiant. The atmosphere was lively yet peaceful—families were relaxing on the grass, a group of girls dressed up specially for a photoshoot, and an elderly couple took a leisurely stroll to enjoy the crisp spring air.

Just like in Japan, the cherry blossom season is fleeting, lasting only about two weeks before the petals fall and give way to fresh green leaves. The peak viewing window typically falls between early to mid-October, so if you plan to catch them, timing is everything.
